HOW TO CLEAN A RAIN DRAIN
A gutter’s purpose is to route rain water away from the home, which protects the home’s siding, landscaping, foundation and basement/crawlspace. Gutters frequently become clogged with leaves, twigs and other debris, particularly in the fall season.
Once this debris enters the gutter’s drain pipe, the entire gutter system is renderedineffective because the water has nowhere to drain. If the clog is not too difficult, you may be able to do the drain cleaning yourself using the following tips:
Things You’ll Need:
* Hand trowel
* Garden hose
* Large rag
1. Remove any debris that sits on top of the gutter’s drain pipe with a hand trowel to access the pipe’s opening.
2. Wrap the end of a garden hose with a large rag, allowing the tip of the hose to extend out of rag an inch or two.
3. Insert the tip of the garden hose into the top of the drain pipe, then stuff the rag into the pipe’s opening until the
rag fills the entire opening. The rag will ensure that the water from the hose will not exit out of the top of the
drain pipe and that the full force of the water pressure is concentrated down the pipe to clear the clog.
4. Turn the hose’s water supply on at full force. Once the water suddenly gushes out of the bottom of the gutter’s drain pipe, the clog has been cleared.
